Mat Salleh @ Kurau, Bangsar

True to its conspicuous name, Mat Salleh is spearheaded by two expats - an Australian & a Frenchman - with a European-inflected repertoire that might channel the flavours of home for some other non-Malaysians in KL. The recipe for the salmon soup, brimming with fresh & moist chunks of fish, boiled potatoes & dill (RM35), was furnished by members of the Finnish community, coming surprisingly close to the hot, wholesome servings that we vividly recall from Helsinki's Market Square. Boeuf bourguignon is presented with a nod to Southeast Asia, thanks to the presence of rice (RM38), while the floating island dessert, featuring feather-soft, smooth creme anglaise in a milky sauce, provides a pleasant close to the meal. A friendly neighbourhood eatery with a warm & welcoming team, Mat Salleh may well deserve to be a permanent resident in Bangsar.
