South Melbourne's Cottle Coffee has opened its first Asian offshoot, a collaboration between Australian Richard Cottle, a fourth-generation coffee purveyor, & Malaysian Looi Miin Wei, who left KL several years ago & started his own cafe Down Under. Cottle at Uptown is a genuinely friendly, feel-good venue - the Cottle Cat might greet you with a purr outside, while senior barista Su Juin stands ready indoors with a warm smile, eager to ensure the (dark roast) cappuccino, (mango butter) cake & (hot) curry puffs hit the spot. Cottle On Coventry's own-roasted beans are flown into KL fortnightly; Richard will shuttle back & forth to provide Cottle Malaysia with his personal touch, backed by decades of experience & dollops of enthusiasm.
Cream is a dreamy coffee bar with both sheen & soul - its aesthetics are gorgeous & its brews seem like a godsend. Try the filter coffee, served in both hot & cold samplings - it might persuade you to fall in love with coffee all over again, a testament to how thoroughly Cream's operators, Malaysian micro-roaster The Roast Things, have mastered their craft.
