Brevis @ The Weld

Air-Infusion Coffee? Brevis may be KL's only cafe to serve beverages brewed via a patented process that seems pretty obscure, intriguing us enough to check out this tiny new venue in The Weld mall.

We loathed our high school physics & chemistry classes, so we won't pretend to understand how Brevis' special automated equipment works. Summarised in a sentence, it's theoretically about injecting air into the machine's pressurised chamber as an 'agent of turbulence' to extract more intense & easily controlled coffee flavours. Argh.

A single cup is brewed each time; we really liked the result, which delivered clean, citrus-caramel notes with a floral undertone. The current leading barista here is enthusiastic about making satisfying coffee; she indicated that she may only remain at Brevis for a few weeks, so we hope the cafe will maintain her standards if she leaves.

Espresso-based beverages are available too: Doppio (RM8), caffe macchiato (RM10), cappuccino & latte (RM12 each). Brevis says it currently uses mostly African single-origins & blends from Q Cup.

Brevis' compact tea selection spans the likes of organic rooibos (RM10, rather enjoyable) & ginseng oolong.

Brevis also offers pastries by third-party suppliers. The croissants (RM4) & pain au chocolat (RM6) are made with excellent French ingredients (Bordier butter & Valrhona chocolate respectively), but in this case, both were overly reheated a few seconds before being served, causing them to become crusty.

We liked the turkey-ham-&-mushroom quiche (RM15), as well as the luscious salted-caramel-&-almond mille-crepe (RM13), both well-made but a bit more steeply priced than necessary, especially since Brevis mainly targets the office-worker crowd.

Rye loaves & other bread are sold in hefty portions; expect simple sandwiches (chicken mayo, etc) to be offered eventually.

Brevis opens during mall hours, Monday-Friday. It's potentially able to open for limited hours on Saturday by advance request, but for now, this cafe seems convenient solely for folks working in the city centre.
